Ice Fishing on the Frozen North
On a frozen lake near the Arctic Circle a guide augers a hole through a metre of ice, hands you a short rod, and you jig for perch and pike in the deep cold while reindeer cross the treeline. There is hot juice on the fire, a snowmobile ride out across the white, and the chance the northern lights turn on overhead. Ice fishing this far north is a winter day you cannot get anywhere warmer.

Marlin off Cabo San Lucas
Where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific at the tip of Baja, the water drops away fast and the billfish stack up: striped marlin, dorado and the blue and black marlin that make Cabo a name anglers know worldwide. A couple of hours
Just get a line in the water.A short inshore or river outing: a traditional boat, a local who knows the spot, hand-lines or light tackle, and you are back on the dock before the heat of the day.
Half a day inshore
Flats, reef and the first good fish.Four or five hours within sight of land: tarpon and snapper on the flats, the reef edge, light tackle, and a skipper who has the tide and the bait dialled in.
A full day offshore
Run out to the deep water.The long day you plan a trip around: heavy gear over the offshore banks, cod and halibut or billfish on the line, and a cooler of fillets to bring back to the dock.
The old way, still working
Greece fishes the way it always has.
Off Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and the Cyclades, a painted wooden kaiki still heads out at first light the way the islands have always done it. You drop lines for sea bream and amberjack over the clear Aegean, pull up the pots, and the skipper grills the catch on the boat with lemon and oil. Half-day or full, this is fishing wrapped in a Greek-island morning.
